A dance in Williamsburg

A dance in Williamsburg.

On Tuesday, May 12, 2009, I took a walk across the Williamsburg Bridge. Progressing along Bedford Avenue, I stumbled upon a celebration of Lag B’Omer by the local residents, which is the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, when Israel was under Roman rule (opinions vary about the origin of this celebration). The festivities consisted of lots of joyful singing and dancing, a bonfire, raffles and bows and arrows, for the boys, young men, and elders, and popsicles for the young girls.

It was an interesting day, one person approached me (a young woman), to discern my intentions. After explaining that it was for personal reasons, and exchanging contact information, I was left pretty much unencumbered. This was a big step for me. Usually when confronted in similar circumstances I typically demur, and shy away.
